LinguaBar

What LinguaBar stores, and what it never does

No customer data on our servers Contact support
In short: LinguaBar stores your switcher settings. If you use AI translation, your store’s own published content is sent to a translation service and the result is written into Shopify. Nothing about your customers is ever stored.

LinguaBar is a Shopify app that shows a language switcher on your storefront and can translate your store’s content with AI. It needs to know which language a visitor is reading in, and nothing else about them. No profile of your customers is ever built, and none is ever stored.

No customer data on our servers

LinguaBar holds no personal data about your customers. No names, no email addresses, no orders, no browsing history, no IP addresses, no identifiers of any kind. The app never requests the permissions that would allow it to read them.

On your storefront, the app writes three cookies to the visitor’s own browser, and nothing else:

  • linguabar_manual_lang — the language a visitor picked, so their choice is respected on later visits. Expires after a year.
  • linguabar_banner_dismissed and linguabar_banner_dismissed_mobile — a single digit recording that the visitor closed the suggestion banner, so it is not shown again. Expire after thirty days.

These cookies hold a language code or a digit. They carry no identifier, they are never read by us, and they are never sent to our servers. LinguaBar runs no analytics and no tracking script.

How the visitor’s country is determined

When you turn on the automatic redirect or the suggestion banner, LinguaBar needs to know which country a visitor is browsing from. It reads that from Shopify’s own window.Shopify object whenever Shopify provides it, which is the usual case.

Only when Shopify does not provide it, the visitor’s browser asks ipapi.co to resolve the country from their IP address. That request goes straight from the visitor to ipapi.co and never passes through our servers. What comes back is a two-letter country code, held in memory for the length of the page view and then gone. If you leave both features off, this request never happens at all.

AI translation, only when you use it

AI translation stays off until you turn it on and press the translate button. When you do, LinguaBar reads the published text of your store — products and their options, collections, pages, blog posts, navigation menus, store policies and theme texts — and sends it, with the source and target language codes, to a cloud machine-translation provider acting as our processor. The translated text is then written into your store through Shopify’s translation system, where you can review or edit it at any time.

Only content already published on your storefront is sent, and the brand and product names protected from translation are left as they are. No customer data is ever sent: the app has no access to it.

Our translation providers may process this text outside the European Union, including in the United States, in order to return the translation. The list of providers we use is available on request at contact.zeppelin.studio@gmail.com.

What the app stores about your store

  • Your store domain, used to identify which settings belong to you.
  • Your switcher settings: the languages you offer, the default one, position, colors, flag style, the display modes for desktop and mobile, any custom banner text you write, and whether AI translation is turned on.
  • Your current plan, free or pro, so the right features are unlocked.
  • The access tokens issued by Shopify when you install the app. They are what allow the app to talk to your store, and they stop working when you uninstall.
  • If you use AI translation: a record of each translation run — the languages, its progress, the number of fields and characters translated, the error messages returned along the way, and the brand and product names protected from translation — and the number of characters translated for your store each month.

The translation cache

So that the same sentence is not translated twice, LinguaBar keeps translated text in a cache. Each entry holds the translated text, the language pair and the provider, indexed by a fingerprint of the original sentence — the original text itself is not stored.

The cache is not linked to any store: an entry is reused whenever the exact same sentence is translated into the same language again. It only ever holds text that was published on a storefront, and it is not deleted when a store uninstalls the app.

What the app reads from Shopify

LinguaBar asks for read access to your products and for permission to manage script tags. It reads your store’s primary language and published languages, so the switcher only offers languages that exist on your store.

If you turn on AI translation, Shopify asks you separately, at that moment, to allow LinguaBar to read and write translations and to read and manage your store’s languages. That is what lets it publish a language and write translated content. Every permission is shown to you by Shopify before you grant it.

Where it is hosted

The application runs on Vercel and the database is hosted by Neon, both in the United States, in the AWS us-east-1 region in Virginia. Traffic between your store, the app and the database is encrypted in transit. Apart from the translation providers described above, used only when you run AI translation, no data is transferred to any other processor.

If you are in the European Union, the data leaving it is the store data listed above and, when you use AI translation, your store’s published content — never anything belonging to your customers.

How long it is kept, and how it is deleted

When you uninstall the app, Shopify notifies us and your session and switcher settings are deleted from the database straight away. The access tokens stop working at the same moment. Cookies already set in a visitor’s browser expire on their own schedule and stop having any effect immediately, since the script is no longer served.

When Shopify asks us to erase a store — which it does 48 hours after an uninstall, or on your request — the translation run records and monthly usage for that store are deleted as well. LinguaBar implements Shopify’s mandatory compliance webhooks, including shop/redact, customers/redact and customers/data_request. The two customer requests return nothing, because there is nothing to return.

Translations already written into your store belong to your store: they stay in Shopify after you uninstall, and you can edit or remove them there. The shared translation cache described above is kept.

Your rights
